One of the most complete and beautiful hiking trails in Mallorca is the one that runs through three peaks that exceed 1,000m, those of Puig de l'Ofre, Franquesa and Rateta. The route not only ascends a long ridge to access these summits, but also surrounds the Cúber reservoir offering excellent views of the highest summit of the island, the Puig Major, in the Sierra de la Tramontana.

A beautiful hiking trail in Mallorca

We leave from the town of Sóller, to take the Cúber reservoir, less than 20km along the Ma-10, a beautiful mountain road. In summer it is convenient to go soon as cars are piled up on the shoulder, where the police can fine, for the few parking spaces next to the reservoir. It was not our first hiking trail in Mallorca or in the Balearic Islands, but the first along the Puig Major.

Cúber reservoir

The Cúber reservoir is an artificial reservoir, which next to the reservoir of Gorg blau it supplies drinking water to the capital of the island, Palma de Mallorca. The first impression when you see it is of a beautiful lake surrounded by rugged limestone peaks. In summer it may seem a somewhat dry place, but in spring, green sprouts largely from the crossing.

Circular route of the three “thousands” in the Tramontana

How could it be otherwise, the route is located in the middle of the Sierra de la Tramontana. The journey begins on an asphalt track until you reach the small dam from the reservoir, which is left on the right to take a path that goes into a small canyon. Here you have to be careful as it is a long descent with many stones, sand and tends to slip.

Slope curve

Once down the lottery is drawn torrent of Almará and the ascent to the first peak begins, towards the Rateta. The ascension is gradual and the only difficulty it can have is the heat and the stones of the road, since some can cause the ankles to suffer a little. From the torrent to the first peak they are somewhat less than 300m of unevenness.

Hiking in Mallorca

From the Rateta, at 1,103m, there are the best views towards the Puig Major and the Cúber reservoir, you can even see the sea price Mediterranean and much of the island of Mallorca. At this point it is worth stopping and stopping to enjoy the views, because they deserve them without a doubt.

Puig da sa Rateta

Already from the Rateta by a rocky road you descend towards the Puig de na Franquesa, with 1,067m, somewhat lower, but with similar views towards the reservoir and towards the Puig Major. During the path there is a fence on the right, where before reaching the third peak you can tackle If you see that the route becomes a bit long. The detour is shortly after passing a huge arrow shaped landmark.

The third is somewhat higher, 1,091m high, but it is also not a bad idea to stop if the forces begin to falter.
