It is very likely that if we visit southern Ireland we end up doing the tourist kerry ring. A roadtrip of about 170 km of route that runs through places of great beauty like the house of Muckross, Ross Castle, stone forts or abbeys lost in the forest among many other things. Despite its strong point are the landscapes around the Killarney National Park, such as Lake Leane, the upper lakes with the view of the ladies (Ladies view) and the amazing road along the coast.

Ross Castle in the Kerry Ring

Ross's castle. Point to visit inside Kerry's ring

We did the kerry ring an extremely rainy day in the month of July. In fact it had been raining us 4 days in a row and the day of the route did not seem to be different. Occasionally, some sunbeams came out, but they always came with water droplets, which we just got used to.

Ross Castle in the Kerry Ring

Coincidentally the first place we stopped was the Ross Castle, on the banks of Lake Leane. A fairly large lake and where river cruises are made.

Ross Castle in the Kerry Ring

Ross Castle more than a castle is a fortress. Built around the 15th century by O'Donoghue it was modified over the years. Today you can visit for free or by guided tour.

On the outside it is quite charming, especially when on clear days the castle is reflected on the lake. Its interior is quite austere and there is hardly any furniture left at the time, so 1 hour would be more than enough to visit it.

Practical data

When to go to Ross Castle?

It is recommended to go early since it is a very frequented castle and is quickly filled with tourists. The parking is large and there are usually no parking problems.

How to get to Ross Castle?

Personally, the ideal is to do it by car which will allow us to make the route in one day and completely at our leisure and stopping where we need. To arrive we must go to Killarney and take the Ross Road, road that ends in the same castle.

There is an option through public transport and it is through bus 280 that leaves Killarney at 11:20 and goes around the ring in 6 hours. There is one daily and has about 19 stops. More information here.

Another option is to hire a tour inside the Kerry ring. Prices start from 25 onwards.
