The Cibeles Fountain. As good locals we are, we can't stop talking about our city, Madrid. That is why we have decided to create a series of articles and travel advice related to the emblematic capital of Spain starting with one of the spaces where many sports titles have been held. A place and an essential point in every visit, almost crossing roads, in order to see the most beautiful spaces of the capital of the Apple orchards.

The Cibeles Fountain

Carlos III, the so-called best mayor of Madrid, was responsible for bringing us to the present day the source of the Cibeles. Designed by Ventura Rodriguez, the fountain consists of 2 male lions inspired by the mythology of Atalanta and Hipómenes, and sitting on a car the figure of the goddess Cibeles or Mother Earth.

Cibeles Fountain

The Cibeles fountain was originally intended for the gardens of The Farm of San Idelfonso, in Segovia, but when Carlos III decided to modernize the Paseo del Prado he decided to place it in front of the Buenavista Palace, a few meters from the center of the square. A few years later in 1895 it was when he moved to his current location, right in the center of the square, making his visit a bit complicated, really, since you have to get around cars when being in the middle of a roundabout.

Cibeles Fountain

Surrounding the source of the Cibeles we have 4 key points. He Bank of Spain, the Palacio de Buenavista, the Casa de América or Palacio de Linares and the Palacio de Cibeles. All of them are located between the Madrid crossing and longest street in Madrid, the street of Alcalá and the walks of Recoletos and the Prado.

Buenavista Palace

The current house of Army Headquarters belonged in its beginnings to theAlba House, when it was a farm called Buenavista's loft. As a curiosity, the current palace at the time of Jose I Bonaparte It was chosen as the headquarters of the future museum of paintings, Prado Museum, but the French power in Spain was so fleeting that the idea vanished shortly after the march of the ephemeral king.

Palace of Buenavista in the 19th century

We recommend seeing the changing of the guard, the last Friday of each month with the exception of July, August and December. It is at 11h.

Bank of Spain

The current Bank of Spain is a building from the end of the 19th century. Today access is not allowed, so we can only settle for its impressive facade.
