Aigues Mortes. If we ask for a walled city in the South of France, it quickly comes to mind Carcassonne and rarely Aigues Mortes. A pity since its innate beauty as its strange enclave surrounded by channels and pink marshes, well deserves a reserved space in our schedules.
Aigues Mortes - South Gate
France. The walled city of Aigues Mortes
Aigues Mortes It was founded during the Roman Empire, but it was not until the thirteenth century when it took some relevance. Being established in a place marshy difficult to build and well connected by channels, was used to build a port inside with connection to the Mediterranean and commercially exploit it with Italy and the Middle East.
Vandalism on the Highways
I hate having to start this way and titles like this don't bring anything good. It was the summer of 2013 when for personal reasons we came up with the sparkly Idea of sleeping in the car. We have done it on many occasions, both inside and around it, but generally we do not use the rest areas of the highways. I knew there was pillage in these places, but fool of me ... I thought, how it was going to touch me! Well, nothing is further from reality, since in the lottery draw of the lottery in "vandalism" it was our turn. Some funny, taking advantage of our groundhog sleep, we split the 4 car tires, causing a laugh of despair when we discover it.
There was no choice but to call the crane and pay the change of wheels…. Who does this kind of thing in an effort to annoy the trip? The owners of the cranes themselves? There I leave the debate, but the truth is that they do not make any sense. Anyway this was bad luck, since France It is a very safe country.
As always, we are in a hurry !!! We played with just 2 hours to visit the city as we were on our way toNimes and after the incident we had lost almost 1 whole day, forcing us to run from one place to another.
The first thing was to arrive and look like crazy parking by the north entrance, since in theory it would be possible to leave the car in the median, or what is the same a blue Zone of payment. Parking elsewhere would lead us to take a good walk and it is not time that we have left over right now ... what agonies we are.
After parking the car, we go to the aforementioned north entrance, just in front where the boats that come from the channel. The truth is that we saw a boat that hosted about 15 tourists and healthy envy ran from top to bottom. It must be a beautiful experience to spend a few days browsing these beautiful channels.
Aigues Mortes - Canal du Rhone to Sete
We began to walk through its streets, some of them overflowing with restaurants and souvenir shops, but unlike Carcassonne, not the whole city is like that, and here people really live within the walls. In a way it reminds me of Ávila.
Crossing the city completely, we go out through the south entrance, where there is a large parking lot that we did not see at the beginning. From this area, we can enjoy to a greater extent the walls and how amazingly well preserved they are, even the beautiful gargoyles that crown some of their towers.
Before re-entering, I would recommend visiting pink marshes that can be seen from this side of the city. This curious color is mainly produced by salt.
Returning to the north entrance, we stand next to the Constancia Tower, used as a fort and jail like so many others.
Aigues Mortes - Constancia Tower
Well, in summary this is Aigues Mortes, not as visited as Carcassonne but highly recommended to any traveler who passes through the area.

Where to sleep Aigues Mortes?
We can sleep inside the city in any of the many hotels it houses, but an interesting idea would be to stay in one of the campsites close to the beach, like the Espiguette or the L'Eden, both in the border town of Le Grau du Roi.
A recommendation would be the Le Royal Hotel just outside but which can be reached on foot from the walled city.
