The Sierra de Neila It is one of the many mountainous formations that make up the Iberian System. Located in the province of Burgos, it is well known in the world of ice climbing because during the winter months a lot of waterfalls are frozen. But this was not the reason we visited this area, but because it houses a large number of lakes of origin glacier that make this place worth visiting.

Hiking in the Sierra de Neila
Our route starts from the Neila Shelter, located at 1850m altitude and in the mediations of the town of the same name. As you will see in the graph GPS, the slope of the route is very small (only 476m), so it is suitable for All public.
We start in the direction South west, just behind the refuge, starting to climb through the pine forest until it ends up leaving the right side Laguna de los Patos and Brava. So far there was no marked path.
Lagoons of Patos and La Pardilla
The climb is simple by zig zag on the abundant snow. But not everything is gold that glitters, since the strong wind that reigned that day lowered temperatures to numbers demoniacs. The clouds passed at a dizzying speed, and the light appeared and disappeared at will, while the girls looked for a little sun to warm up.
Sierra de Neila
We quickly reach the top of the highest peak in the area, the Countryside which grazes the 2100m of altitude. According to the photo shown below, there was no time to throw a patch, so we quickly left the area in order to reach lower levels. Later the weather would change to good 😀.
Bordering the skirt of the mountains, we see a succession of large lakes as the "other" Black Lagoon and Long. I say another, because it is called exactly the same as one located in the nearby Sierra de Urbión and much more famous than this.
The Laguna Larga wanted to jump down the slope and put on some ice skates. It was totally smooth and with a good thickness, or so it seemed.
Sierra de Neila
Among so much snow it was impossible to see the land cut that separated the Long Lagoon from the Black. The latter was located just at the end of the hillside, which reached its end point connected to a small path that bordered the Lakes from the bottom. This road is the most used to see the lakes in summer, since practically in 15 minutes from the parking you plant yourself at the feet of these dinosaurs glacial.
After the Laguna Negra, we arrive at what we assume was the Laguna Larga…. You see how you want to wear some ice skates!!!!
Finally, after this last lagoon, we reach an asphalted road that is probably open in summer. A few hundred meters below we reach the starting point, the Neila Shelter.
Practical data Hiking in the Sierra de Neila
When to go?
Neila It is a fairly cold area in winter and with mild temperatures in summer. Most of the routes are affordable for all audiences, but we must take appropriate precautions during the winter season.
How to get?
The nearest town is Neila, located in the province of Burgos and very close to La Rioja. To get to it, we will have to cross a series of fairly steep roads and the odd port. Before reaching Neila there is a deviation towards the Neila Shelter, where there is a parking on foot of this and another located above, just where the road ends.
What to wear
It is necessary to have adequate material for snow and ice during the months of December to April. The rest of the months we will wear the usual, hiking boots, sunscreen, water, ..., etc.
Where to sleep?
At the foot of the Lakes there is a very well equipped mountain shelter. But if what we like are the rural houses, we will have a great variety for all the towns of the region.
